Un Goût Étranger
French music for 2 viols
One rarely has an opportunity to listen to two viola da gambas. The music written in France at the time required the instrument to have a 7th string added to the original 6-string instrument. The richness and warmth of this combination is unparalleled. The music on this program is among the most elegant, spirited, evocative, and intimate written for these two equal partners. Music by Marin Marais, Forquerais, Sainte Colombe, and more.
Musicians:
Josephine van Lier, viola da gamba
Julie Hereish, viola da gamba

Musick for a While
This trio of premier Edmonton musicians will perform a very varied program of music for voice, viola da gamba/cello and harpsichord, with spectacular music by Bach, Handel, Purcell, and Geminiani.
On the program are several outstanding pieces, including some witty songs by Purcell, arias from Rinaldo and Ezio by Handel, and Bach’s stunning and profound Komm, süßes Kreuz from the St. Matthew Passion. They will perform one of the spectacular and seldom heard sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord by Bach, and a virtuoso and obscure sonata for cello and harpsichord by Geminiani.
Musicians:
Josephine van Lier, viola da gamba, baroque cello
Leanne Regehr, harpsichord
